FERNANDO ALEGRIA was the author of numerous literary works spanning the various genres of prose fiction, poetry and essays. He was also one of the country’s most highly regarded critics of Latin American literature. Before his death in 2005, Alegria held a chair in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Stanford University.
