Paper Hearts: A Marshall James Thriller Short Story
It's been thirty years since Marshall James last spoke to the love of his life, LAPD Homicide Detective Mac McElroy. Things had gone from bad to over and done with, when Mac had told him he was trouble times ten and the only way to survive was alone. Marshall finds an old Valentine's Day Card, the last communication between them, and he decides against the odds to see if he could get the final goodbye they'd never had. He takes us back in time to L.A., 1985, where life had seemed to be going well at last, until a corpse with a familiar face and a brutal cause of death showed up and sent them spiraling to a finish. Marshall pursues one last killer, and when it's over, the only thing he's killed is love. But is it really too late? Or could time, age, and not enough wisdom change their fate.

About the Author

I've been writing since I was eight or nine, quite a long time in the brief span of any life. I'm the author of the Kyle Callahan Mysteries, three of which have been best sellers on Kindle. My Linda Sikorsky Mystery, 'Last Room at the Cliff's Edge', was released in September, 2016, and called a winner by Publishers Weekly. I released 'Murder at the Paisley Parrot: A Marshall James Thriller' in 2017, with its follow-up, 'Beautiful Corpse' in March, 2020. 'Black Cat White Paws: A Maggie Dahl Mystery' came out in 2018, followed by my supernatural chiller, 'A House in the Woods.'

I started the Mark McNease Mysteries podcast (markmcneasemysteries.com) in 2020 to narrate my own mysteries and fiction, beginning with 'Reservation for Murder: A Kyle Callahan Mystery' (book #6 in the series, and a Kindle bestseller in LGBT mysteries).

My short story 'Stop the Car' was selected as a Kindle Single and is now an audiobook narrated by the amazing Braden Wright. It was selected twice to be included in the Amazon Prime reading library.

I also have an Emmy for Outstanding Children's Program for 'Into the Outdoors', a television show I co-created and wrote for two years that is now in its 21st year.

I live in the New Jersey woods with my husband, Frank, and our two cats, Wilma and Peanut.

You can find me at my website, MarkMcNease.com, as well as on Facebook (MarkMcNeaseWriter) and Twitter (@markmcnease).
