Purpose: This book explains the team approach to holistically caring for patients living with neurological disease. These broad-based objectives are met completely by this book.
Audience: Both the content and the presentation make this book most beneficial for healthcare professionals: physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers, and palliative care and hospice staff. Because it is not highly technical, some patients or family members also may be interested, but it is intense.
Features: The book covers many different topics, beginning with explanations of various neurological diseases that are progressively degenerative and fatal. It provides information on communication, bearing bad news, working with the family, ethical considerations, and decision making. There are several tables, but no pictures. The appendix helps locate specific disease information.
Assessment: As a clinical nurse specialist with 19 years of experience as a nurse educator and a hospice nurse, some of that time in neurological acute care, I can attest that this book offers accurate, high quality information about the care of these patients as they need palliative and end-of-life care.
