What age group isPaleo Girlintended for?
I wrotePaleo Girlfor girls in their teens to 20sbut I’ve had women in their 50s (and up!) tell me that they’ve learned a great deal about wellness from my book! So technically you could say it appeals to women of all ages.
Can boys learn anything fromPaleo Girl?
Paleo Girlis essentially a paleo primer meant for anyone looking for a basic foundation of the paleo lifestyle. So, yes, boys can learn paleo essentials by reading this book. And speaking of the boys, I’ve had grown menspecifically fathersreach out to me to tell me they’ve read my book and it’s completely changed the relationship they have with their daughters. That the book served as an “insider’s view” of what their daughters are going through during those sometimes challenging teen years and that it’s helped them speak to their daughters in a whole new way. I really love that!
It’s a diet book. Why did you dedicate an entire chapter to puberty?
I’d like to think ofPaleo Girlmore as a lifestyle book, rather than a diet book. Yes, it discusses diet (aka the food we eat), but it also covers exercise, sleep, self-esteem, eating disorders, bullying, self-empowerment, recipes, DIY beauty products, and more. So why the chapter on puberty? Because puberty is a huge subject matter for the book’s intended demographic. You can't exactly talk about physical and mental health without touching on some topics related to puberty!
I love the recipes inPaleo Girl! Where can I find more recipes you’ve created?
I’m so glad to hear thatthank you! I post a ton of recipes and foodie pics on my Instagram: instagram.com/leslieklenke or search LeslieKlenke. I hope to see you there!
I read on MarksDailyApple.com that there was going to be aPaleo Boybook. Any update on this?
I did initially plan on writing a similar book for boys with the help of my husbandsince he had more experience being a teen boy than I did! But with the launch of my book, I was pulled in a different direction and am no longer pursuing this project.
Is there going to be aPaleo Girl 2?
That’s a great question! Writing (and photographing and designing) a book is a lot of work! While I’ve certainly learned enough about both physical and mental wellness to write a whole new book sincePaleo Girlwas released, I currently do not have plans to write a follow-up. At least not in the traditional sense!
I’ve read that writing this book was a growing experience for you. Care to share the biggest thingPaleo Girltaught you?
Paleo Girltaught me more about myself than I ever expected it would! To find the voice for the book, I looked inside to find my inner teendialogue. Doing so opened all kinds of old memories andexperiences I had completely forgotten were there. The most notable being that I was able to figure out why and when I started yo-yo dieting. (You can read about that here:http://bit.ly/1QmKjNa.)
I love your dogs! What breed are they?
Haha, I love this! Olie and Harlow are Boston Terriers and they have the funniest and sweetest personalities. Thanks for asking!
What do you typically eat each day? And what do your workouts look like?
Let me preface this answer with a statement: what works for me may not work for you. We all have different chemistry, tastes, and lifestyles. Please, do not simply copy what I do. You are unique and should invest the time to see what your body respondsbest to! With that said, here’s a typical day for me, both food and exercise:
Breakfast: A Primal Fuel shake when I don’t have time to cook, otherwise I enjoy eggs, bacon, breakfast sweet potatoes, and half an avocado or “Better Than Oatmeal.” (The recipe for that is inPaleo Girlor search my Instagram!)
Lunch: A big salad with whatever kind of meat and veggies I have on hand, topped with either homemade dressing or something from Primal Kitchen.
Exercise: I love working out in the middle of the dayspecifically on weekdays. I hit the gym on my lunch break around 1:30-2PM. I like to row 1,000 meters, and then I listen to my body and workout intuitively. Sometimes that means I lift free weights or use the machines, other times I do an entire routine using bodyweight only. Then I always end my workout with the stretching progression fromPaleo Girl. If it’s the weekend, I prefer getting outside and going on a hike.
Dinner: Almost always a simple meat and veggie dish. My go-to is to put a piece of beef in the slow cooker in the morning, that way dinner is ready for me when it’s dinnertime! Whip up some friedcaulirice andbasicside salad and you’re good to go.
Snacks: I only snack if I’m hungryI try to avoid mindless munching! My favorite snacks are raw almonds or mac nuts, Primal Kitchen Dark Chocolate Almond Bars, or Mint ChocolateRXBARS.
Are you sure the paleo diet is right for me?
No, I’m not. And I would never suggest that anything in life is ever one-size-fits-all. I wrotePaleo Girlto encourage girls to eat real, whole foods. To feel empowered to get in the kitchen and learn how to cook. To think and make choices that best suit them. To love themselves, and to put their health first. So is paleo right for you? Maybe. Maybe not. But I wholeheartedly encourage you to explore your options and discover what true health can mean to you!
