Overview

Margaret Aycock is an accomplished artist and experienced oil painting teacher. While her paintings often reflect the landscape in and around her home in Oklahoma, for this book, she travels to the French countryside, where pioneers of the Impressionist movement once found their inspiration. She too, found inspiration for her painterly landscapes in the acres of wild poppies, olive orchards, and vineyards that dotted the land around the abbey where she stayed. In this book Margaret Aycock demonstrates the complete oil painting process from field to studio with easy to understand instructions and practical tips and tricks.Students at all levels will benefit from step by step written instructions and full color photo examples. Readers will learn how to structure a pleasing composition, create a focal point, mix color, make, and use painting tools. She will illustrate how to hold a brush to achieve interesting effects, and how to use the thick over thin layering process to create a painterly style landscape. Beginners and accomplished artists will also benefit from the "homework" section at the back of the book. Pack your bags and enjoy the oil painting journey.

About the Author

My earliest memories of learning to paint, take me back to the Adirondack Mountains where my dad worked at a camp for boys. It was there where I was given my own little easel and watercolors and allowed to paint pictures of pine trees, chipmunks, and deer for as long as I wanted in the arts and crafts cabin. Little did I know that what was nurtured there would, in later years, become my profession.
I now live in Oklahoma where I have taught adult oil painting classes and workshops for over twenty five years. I make a living selling my work in physical galleries and in my own, online gallery. I also work with the Arts and Humanities Council as an artist in residence at a local hospital.
I have always had a love of the great outdoors and have been fortunate to be able to spend a great deal of time outside, observing and painting the beauty that I find there.
I confess, I had a little fear of flying and went kicking and screaming to France. My husband has always wanted to go and lured me there with a promise of undisturbed painting time, and French cooking. I am so happy to have gone and even happier to share that experience with you in this book.
