About the Author

Rob Forsyth trained at Cambridge and Oxford Universities. His general paediatric training was in Nottingham before moving to Newcastle to complete a PhD in brain energy metabolism. After a fellowship in Vancouver he was appointed as consultant and senior lecturer in child neurology in Newcastle in 1997. He is National Training Adviser for the British Paediatric Neurology Association and Neurology Specialty Advisory Committee of the RCPCH.

Richard Newton trained at King's and Guy's in London and then completed a GP Vocational Training Scheme in Humberside. A growing interest in paediatric neurology then took him to Manchester where he completed his higher specialist training. He has been a consultant in paediatric neurology to the Manchester Children's Hospitals since 1983 and their Director of Clinical Services, later Medical Director from 1988 to 1997.

Description: This is the third edition of a book that provides a concise summary of topics and diseases in pediatric neurology. This edition is notably longer than the previous edition of 2012 because it incorporates new research in this field.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a concise guide to working up and treating both rare and common neurological conditions in children. While this is a sizeable task, this handbook-style book does a noteworthy job of tackling it. This is needed as a quick reference guide, especially for trainees who are on the wards with limited time. The book meets its objectives through its concise reviews of rare and common conditions, presenting symptoms, exam findings, diagnosis, and treatment. Because it is a handbook-style book, there are things missing such as details of certain conditions or less common variations of the conditions. This is acceptable, however, because it is not meant to to serve as a complete reference guide.
Audience: The intended audience is trainees, qualified pediatricians, and pediatric neurologists, and the book is written so they can understand the material. However, the book seems most appropriate for trainees and qualified pediatricians; pediatric neurologists may find it lacking in detail. The authors are from the field of pediatric neurology and include clinicians, researchers, and leaders in professional associations.
Features: The book approaches neurological conditions in a few different ways. First, it approaches them from a signs and symptoms perspective, presenting a symptom or sign, reviewing key history and physical exam findings, and then providing a differential diagnosis. The second approach discusses each specific condition, as is done in chapter 4. Here, the book provides more detail in the work-up and management of each condition. Finally, it approaches neurological conditions as they are encountered through interactions with other specialties. This varied approach enables readers to learn about these conditions as they would be encountered in the real world. There are many key images and diagrams that supplement the text very well, such as table 2.2 on page 60 that reviews how common pathologies appear on different imaging modalities. This and many other diagrams provide quick and easy references.
Assessment: This is a wonderful addition to the field of pediatric neurology as it provides a quick and reliable source to reference when approaching a child with a neurological problem. Its various approaches to a neurological disease make it easy to use. It will be very useful for pediatric neurology trainees and pediatricians, but it may be lacking in detail for more seasoned pediatric neurologists. I have not read the similarly titled Handbook of Pediatric Neurology, Sims et al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2014), but a review of its table of contents reveals that each chapter is dedicated to a specific disorder category, such as pediatric neuroimmunology or headache and pain syndromes. While this is a logical approach for a handbook, this book provides several different approaches to reviewing different neurological conditions. This is unique and allows more versatile use of the book.
