Overview

The aim of this new third edition of the Oxford Handbook of ENT and Head and Neck Surgery, like all other Oxford Handbooks, is to provide a compact, comprehensive, and easily accessible guide to all areas of the field.

The core text is based on an anatomical list of ear nose and throat diseases. There are separate sections on ENT examinations, investigations, common operations, ward care, and emergencies, as well as a chapter detailing the roles of other ENT health professionals. There is also a chapter on common methods of presentation, which acts a guide for dealing with patients as they present in clinical practice. This enables diagnosis based on symptoms, history, and relevant investigations, and also cross-references to more detailed information in individual anatomical chapters.

This edition also features a new chapter on the ENT specialty in the rest of the world, as well as an illustrated overview of flaps, expanded information on the ear, and new figures to aid understanding, making this Handbook an essential companion to all trainees and nurses specialising in ENT.

Description: This pocket handbook for the student of otolaryngology is organized by anatomic site, but includes other chapters helpful for use in the clinic and wards.
Purpose: This is specifically designed to be a rapid reference pocket guide for otolaryngology students and the authors have done a great job of achieving these worthy objectives.
Audience: The book is intended for medical students doing an otolaryngology rotation. This could also be used by first year residents as well as other medical staff including nurses and physician assistants.
Features: This book delivers a fairly complete, yet compact, review of common otolaryngology problems. Organized by anatomic site, each chapter reviews common problems and discusses work-up, examination and treatment. Some unique chapters cover presentation of common problems by symptom, common procedures, ENT emergencies, and care of the hospitalized patient. Because the book is written by U.K. authors, some of the medications mentioned are not commonly found in the U.S.
Assessment: There have been other handbooks on this topic, but this is an attractive addition with current information. This book is also intended to be used as a notebook, providing blank pages for the reader to make notes.
