Gavin Spickett has been a Consultant Clinical Immunologist & Allergist In Newcastle upon Tyne since 1991, after training in Oxford, Ipswich and Northwick Park. He has in addition, until quite recently, been a general physician participating in unselected medical admissions. He has been responsible for the development of the Regional Immunology Laboratory, and clinical services for the North-East and Cumbria. He has particular clinical interest in primary immune deficiencies, allergic and autoimmune diseases and chronic fatigue as well as quality standards in clinical and laboratory immunology.

Description: This is a good pocket reference for trainees (medical students, residents, and fellows) undergoing training/rotation in clinical immunology and allergy. It presents the main relevant information in bulleted lists under each diagnosis commonly encountered in the clinical setting.
Purpose: Although the author does not explicitly state the purpose of the book, in the introductory section he discusses at great length the issues he sees with the NHS in the U.K. as well as the impact on clinical immunology services.
Audience: Similarly, the author does not discuss the intended audience, but the format (concise bullet points), the level of information, and size of the book indicates that it is meant to be a guide to clinical immunologic diseases for trainees. The book is the perfect size to fit in a white coat pocket so that a trainee can pull it out to look up information quickly. The author is a clinical immunologist who understands the main basic information clinicians need to know about clinical immunology.
Features: Part I covers immunodeficiencies, allergic diseases, and autoimmune diseases, while part II covers immunologic testing. The best aspect of the book is the way it is formatted so that one can look up an immunologic disease and quickly learn the cause, presentation, and treatment in a few minutes (over 1-3 short pages). It does not have references, but it includes the URLs of useful websites for more information. Readers will have to refer to larger textbooks or original articles for more detailed information.
Assessment: This is a quick read with just enough information for trainees to readily access or for beginners in the field of clinical immunology to get an overview of the range of disease entities encountered in the clinical setting. With significant increased understanding of immunology and recognition of the basic mechanisms underlying various primary immunodeficiencies in the last few years, this book is a timely update of the previous edition.
