About the Author

CHARLES AVILA was Research Assistant of Father Jose Vicente Braganza, SVD, in the
latter’s writing of “The Encounter,” a 1960's book on the epic story of the Christianization of the Philippines.

Charles Avila’s study of original Latin and Greek sources of the history of the most foundational social concept yielded the now classic book OWNERSHIP: Early Christian Teaching. It was originally published jointly by Sheed and Ward, London and Orbis Books, New York and is now distributed by Wipf and Stock, Eugene, Oregon and by Allen John Publishing and The Gardener’s Tales, Manila. He is author of several other books that have been translated into many languages worldwide.

These days, Charles serves as Chairman of the Lay Society of Saint Arnold Janssen and as Executive Director of the Confederation of National Coconut Farmers’ Organizations of the Philippines. He was elected recently as Coconut Committee Chairman of the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fisheries. And he has served the town of his birth (Tanauan Leyte) as elected mayor.

He studied Theology and got his Master’s degree in Philosophy from the Divine Word Seminary, Quezon City and Tagaytay City.

His latest opus is The Untold Magellan Story. He lives in Pasig City, Philippines.
