About the Author

Owen James Nugent (11/14/1892-8/17/1991) was an ardent worker of crossword puzzles during his lifetime. He kept careful notes in long hand, eventually filling several large binders. These were then entered into computer form.
Owen was a native of Alexandria, VA. He came to Baltimore in 1918 after his marriage to the former Margaret Cummings. He served in the Navy during World War I as an instructor aboard the USS Constellation. A football and baseball fan, he played sandlot baseball as a youth in Alexandria and once pitched in a game with Baltimore's St. Mary's Industrial School in which Babe Ruth was the opposing pitcher. He retired in 1961 from Crown Cork and Seal in Baltimore, where he had served as foreman of the cork grinding department earlier in his 38-year career. Owen, at age 98, died after a brief illness
