Freidel's brief study covers 1917 and 1918. Rather than a straight history, this is an anecdotal collection drawn mostly from firsthand accounts, diaries, and letters of combatants. The text is punctuated with numerous photos. Though much has been written on the subject, this still "has a place in most public libraries and some school libraries" (LJ 1/1/65).
