Outside the City

Overview

Guitarist Janet Marlow did something distinctive on her 1987 release Outside The City. With the exception of a decent cover version of "When You Wish Upon A Star," Marlow supplied the tunes herself. She also tried an unusual instrumental tack, playing 10-string guitar and koto. The results are somewhat similar to standard jazz albums, but have a freshness that comes from hearing her utilize the 10-string's distinctive tuning and the koto's unusual properties in an improvisational setting. Marlow is aided by a fine supporting cast, particularly pianist Renee Rosnes and saxophonist Dave Mann. ~ Ron Wynn
