About the Author

Alyssa Sheinmel is the New York Times bestselling author of several novels for young adults, including The Castle School (for Troubled Girls), What Kind of Girl, A Danger to Herself and Others, and Faceless. Alyssa grew up in Northern California and New York and currently lives and writes in New York.

Eddie Lopez, a northern California native, earned his BFA in theater from the California Institute of the Arts. He has worked professionally in Los Angeles as an actor and is currently with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He began recording audiobooks for family road trips at the age of eight on his home cassette deck.

Matt Godfrey was raised on O'Connor, Welty, and Lee, and spent most of his teenage years in Yoknapatawpha County. But he traveled wherever the books took him, from Alabama to Tokyo, Twain to Murakami. Now he has the privilege of bringing those books to life as an audiobook narrator. He works in all genres and in a lot of accents, but specializes in his beloved Southern Gothic.

When these two self-described Pogues, or working-class townies, living on the Outer Banks of North Carolina decide to escape their unsatisfying home lives by going on a fishing trip, they soon learn how dangerous the open water can be. When a large storm hits Frying Pan Shoals, the two boys and daredevil Savannah, a beautiful Kook (wealthy nonlocal) girl, get stranded on a deserted island with a dilapidated lighthouse while waiting out the storm. When a team of smugglers also seek refuge on the island, the unlikely trio discover they will have to fight for their lives. While touching on some serious subjects like abuse and ethics and narrowly missing a tired love-triangle trope, this lukewarm thriller is a familiar story of ill-conceived adventures, morally gray bad guys, and star-crossed lovers. Based on the Netflix drama, this plot-driven book serves as a fun companion to Outer Banksand will appeal to fans of the show. Main characters default to White.

Though light on substance, this is an enjoyable, quick read. (Thriller. 14-18)
