While he was busy packing a bag she began to go through some of the stuff stacked in the dining room, but there was nothing there to indicate that these men were anything except what they were, messy housekeepers and hoarders who can’t seem to throw out anything. She had just opened a small box on the table when she heard glass breaking and then a thud like something falling to the floor.
Running down a short hall she looked in one bedroom but no one was there. The second room was different, there lay PC on the floor in an ever-widening pool of blood and the right side of his face was gone. That’s when she felt more than saw or heard another bullet and this one was aimed at her, but it hit the pole of a floor lamp and that probably saved her life. Without thinking about it Janet hit the floor, it was a reflex action to her, and her gun was already in her hand. She raised her head and tried to look out the broken window to see who was shooting at her, and from where, but nothing was visible except a few trees.
