A contemporary of the Brothers Grimm, Franz Xaver von Schönwerth collected the folklore, legends, and fairytales of "ordinary folk" in the Upper Palatinate region of his native Bavaria and published them in the 1850s in a three-volume scholarly work. This volume is the first dual-language edition of his tales, which fell into obscurity and have only recently been rediscovered. The 150 fables include "The Spinster Bride," "Pride Will Be Punished," "The Marriage of Sun and Moon," and other enchanting Bavarian folktales.

CHAPTER 1

LOVE, MARRIAGE, AND CHILDBIRTH

The stories in this section tell of love, courtship, becoming a bride, marriage, pregnancy, and birth. The people of the Upper Palatinate saw themselves as being constantly surrounded by Evil. Even before birth a human being was already threatened by it. Schönwerth explains:

When a human being enters this world as a child, he or she immediately enters into a fight with the sinister forces which seek to destroy the mother who gave life and the child who enters into it.

And even later, in the most intimate and affectionate moments of adult life, humans are still threatened by the powers of the dark. In his Introduction to Sitten und Sagen, Schönwerth says about love, for example:

If the time of engagement is, for all intents and purposes, the zenith of life and the path up to this point is an ascending one, there are nevertheless dark forces which drop their poisonous blight into this sunshine of joy: love is haunted by love sorcery.

The stories in the following section illustrate this, often in a dramatic way.

1 Die jungfräuliche Braut

Es war ein Mädchen, welches Abscheu hatte vor der Ehe, der Kinder wegen, die sie nicht liebte, und schritt erst dann zur Ehe, als ihre Zeit um war; denn sie wurde wegen ihres Geldes gesucht.

Der Priester aber, dem sie vor der Trauung beichtete, behielt ihr die Sünde, weil durch ihr Verschulden sieben Wesen nicht zur Welt gekommen wären, und gebot ihr eine Fahrt nach Rom zum Papst.

So ging sie in Begleitung ihres Bräutigams zum Papst nach Rom, aber dieser strafte sie und sandte sie heim mit dem Befehl, stets allein auf dem Wege zu schlafen, und den Ungeheuern, welche ihr begegnen würden, nicht auszuweichen, noch über sie zu steigen.

Es legten sich aber drei fürchterliche Ungeheuer an drei Stationen in den Weg, das erste ein Bär, das letzte eine Schlange, und sie kniete sich vor sie hin, und umfing und küsste sie, und die Ungeheuer hoben sich aus dem Wege.

In der letzten Nachtherberge kam sie am Morgen nicht herunter; man sandte ein Kind hinauf, nach ihr zu schauen. Als dieses die Türe öffnete, sah es eine weiße Taube aus dem Bette auf zum Fenster hinaus fliegen. Man suchte in dem Bette nach, es waren nur mehr Gebeine drin. Das letzte Ungeheuer war in der Nacht gekommen, und hatte zur Strafe den Leib verzehrt; die Seele aber war gerettet.

2 Bis dass der Tod ...

Ein Mädchen hatte sich mit ihrem Geliebten zu ewiger Treue verschworen; er fiel im Kriege, und sie begann ein neues Verhältnis. Da kam der Geliebte nachts auf einem weißen Schimmel zu ihr und entführte sie auf sein Grab, wo sie am Morgen entseelt gefunden wurde.

3 Liebeszauber

In Eschelkam stand ein Küfnergeselle mit einem Mädchen in trautem Verhältnis; er musste auf die Wanderschaft, bat daher das Mädchen um ein Andenken, und wäre es auch nur ein Haar von ihrem Haupte. Sie hatte aber gehört, man solle kein Haar hergeben, wollte indessen doch die Bitte nicht abschlagen und ging hinaus, um aus dem Milchsiebchen ein Haar zu nehmen, wofür sie ein goldenes Ringlein erhielt.

Es waren etwa drei Tage verstrichen, als sie eine unendliche Sehnsucht nach dem Geliebten ergriff: es war ihr, als sollte sie zum Fenster hin11aus. – Auf einmal sah sie das Milchsiebchen zur Tür hereinkommen und zum Fenster hinausfliegen. Nun kam sie zur Ruhe. Der Geliebte aber wartete in einem entfernten Dorfe des Mädchens; statt dessen flog ihm das Siebchen zu. – Später gestand er, wie er zu einer Hexe gegangen sei und das Haar habe besprechen lassen, dass wer es getragen, ihm nachlaufen müsse.

1 The Spinster Bride

There was a girl who despised marriage because of children, whom she did not love, and she first thought about marrying when her time [to conceive children] was up; for she was highly sought after for her money.

However, the priest who heard her confession before the wedding did not absolve her of this sin because it was of her doing that seven beings had not been born, and he ordered her to go on a pilgrimage to the Pope in Rome.

Thus, accompanied by her bridegroom, she set out for Rome to visit the Pope, but the latter, upon giving her a penance, sent her home, ordering her to spend the nights on the way alone, and neither dodge nor pass any monsters whom she were to encounter.

At three stations during her journey, however, three dreadful monsters got in her way; the first a bear and the last a Serpent; and kneeling down before them, she embraced and kissed them, and the monsters cleared out of her path.

At the last night's accommodation, she did not come down in the morning; a child was sent up to look for her. Upon opening the door, it saw a white dove flying up from the bed and leaving through the window. They looked in the bed; all that was left were bones. The last monster had appeared during the night and had eaten the body as a punishment, but the soul had been saved.

2 Till Death ...

A girl had committed herself to being eternally faithful to her beloved; he died serving in the war, and she began a new relationship. One night, her former beloved appeared on a white horse and took her away to his grave where she was found dead in the morning.

3 Love Charm

In the town of Eschelkam there lived a cooper's apprentice who was in an intimate relationship with a girl; he had to take to the road and so asked the girl for a keepsake, even if it were only [a lock of] hair from her head. She, however, had heard that one should not part with hair, but she did not want to deny his request and went outside to get a hair from the milking sieve, for which she received a little golden ring in return.

Three days had passed, when an immense longing for the beloved seized her; she felt as if she should leave right out the window.—All of a sudden, she saw the milking sieve enter through the door and fly out the window. After that, she calmed down. The beloved, however, was waiting for the girl in a village far away; instead, the sieve came rushing to him.—Later he admitted that he had visited a Witch who had put such a spell on the hair that wherever he took it, its owner was compelled to run to him.
