In response to the development of new technologies based on advanced materials and the improved ability to probe complex photo-biological processes at a molecular level, this volume summarizes and evaluates recent research in six areas. Two chapters on geometric isomerization deal with the one-way cis-trans isomerization of aryl-substituted alkenes, and summarize recent mechanistic developments in the area of olefins. Another two chapters are devoted to the photobehavior of molecules in organized assemblies, providing a summary of the literature on solid-state photoreactions of two component crystals and a critical evaluation of the various probes and their photoproperties that can be used to understand the reaction cavities of assemblies.
