This clever book about opposites stars a cast of eclectic snakes. One kind of snake stretches across a spread (a pink "Skinny snake" wears a leotard as she feverishly exercises on a treadmill), and its opposite is unveiled by unfolding a pair of gate-fold flaps ("Plump snake" clutches a chicken drumstick, while still digesting its other meals and belching. A "quiet snake" reads, a "loud snake" recalls Slash from Guns N' Roses; a scarf-wearing "cold snake" resembles a snowcapped mountain range and a "hot snake" lounges on the beach. Fresh and funny. In a fun and sturdy format, Yoon introduces opposites via friendly snakes. The spare text focuses on simple concepts: "Cold snake/Hot snake," "Skinny snake/Plump snake," "One snake/Many snakes!" Brightly colored, cartoonlike reptiles stretch across the double-foldout spreads and are set against a white background. They are full of amusing details: for example, the fuchsia and pink clean snake is taking a bubble bath, and the turquoise and purple quiet one has a stack of books that include Hisstory of Rock and White Snake . Simple text and images come together in a collection of colorful legless reptiles against pure white backgrounds. Lift the two side-folding flaps of the "Dirty snake" to reveal the bubble-bathing of an exceedingly "Clean snake." A quiet snake reveals a loud one, a cold snake a hot one, etc. Some opposites might raise the occasional eyebrow ("few snakes" might make a better opposite to "many snakes" rather than the "one snake" found here), and the pictures are cheery but almost too cartoonish in their simplicity. There is little interaction between each opposnake pairing, and when a group of them appears at the end of the book they are generic, not the interesting characters met previously. For collections in need of a straightforward lift-the-flap title about opposites, this one fulfills a need, if not a desire to see more. (Picture book. 3-6)
