Description: This book reviews the fundamental concepts of ophthalmic drug delivery, the current systems available, and the ocular models under development for future research.
Purpose: The purpose is to update ophthalmic professionals in current practices of ocular drug delivery and to energize future research in other unknown areas.
Audience: The audience is stated to range from graduate-level students to professionals and scientists in the fields of pharmacy, pharmacology, ophthalmology, veterinary medicine, polymer technology, and regulatory affairs. This book contains something for everyone.
Features: The book is well organized, starting with fundamental considerations of ocular drug delivery, to current delivery systems and ocular research models, and continuing to more complex and novel approaches. There are enough black-and-white graphs, tables, pictures, and diagrams to summarize or illustrate what is essential. The chapters vary in length, depending on the topic, and the text is understandable. Relevant chapters include those on cell culture, animals, disease state, and mathematicalmodels of ocula r drug design. Both the corneal and noncorneal routes of delivery and current and future models of each are presented. A section on peptides and protein delivery to the eye is included, with a final chapter on regulatory aspects. References are extensive and relevant in some chapters, although somewhat scant and outdated in others. The section titles are organized appropriately to quickly guide one to the topic or area of interest.
Assessment: The authors have succeeded in compiling an excellent resource in the background and current status of ophthalmic drug delivery, providing an essential starting point for the novice and a recommended reference source for the more advanced reader.
