Description: This is the fifth edition of a surgical atlas describing in detail major surgical points of commonly performed operations in general thoracic surgery. The book is superbly illustrated and provides step-by-step instructions for the execution of the majority of procedures in the field.
Purpose: The purpose (while never actually stated by the authors) is to provide a guide to those performing thoracic surgery.
Audience: The audience is most likely current practitioners of thoracic surgery or trainees (surgical residents or fellows) in this field.
Features: The book covers the vast majority of operations that currently fall into the domain of thoracic surgery. The book's best points are the clear illustrations, although a few may be too simplistic and may not properly convey the anatomic relationships for practitioners not experienced in thoracic anatomy. Overall, however, the illustrations are excellent and are a good refresher tool that surgeons can use immediately prior to performing an operation.
Assessment: This excellent atlas compares favorably to a few other atlases of thoracic surgery. The clear color illustrations offer this book an advantage over most other atlases. Due to ongoing changes in the execution of surgical procedures, this book appropriately replaces previous editions.
