Open Your Hand Wide
The United States is viewed by the world as the 'land of plenty,' yet every day many American families suffer from poverty. How can this be? How does it affect those in its grip? And what is the responsibility of the Christian believer in this area of need?

Open Your Hands Wide reveals the spiritual roots of poverty, explaining why money and programs will never resolve the issue. Sharing stories from those who live in it each day, W.J. Daubney (Director of Hope Initiatives in Rochester, New York) explains why those who are chronically poor can't just 'get a job' to solve their problems, how government has supplanted the church as the major caregiver for the poor, and what the average Christian can do to become engaged in caring for these families today.

Read it, and allow God to soften your heart. By applying these fresh approaches to ministering to the impoverished, you will find a sense of urgency and a willingness to open your hands wide toward your neighbors in need.

About the Author

Bill Daubney is the Executive Director of Hope Initiatives, a faith-based not-for-profit corporation with a focus on addressing poverty issues. A Marine Corps and Vietnam veteran, Bill has had a lifelong interest in poverty issues. While building a career at FedEx as a Sr. Project Management Specialist, he was also instrumental in starting a weekly church outreach into plighted neighborhoods in Rochester, New York.

Fueled by a passion to understand more about poverty he pursued and earned a masters degree in Social Policy Studies. He loves driving his sixteen year old pick-up to Hope Initiatives where he leads an entrepreneurial ministry effort that financially supports itself, provides jobs, and creates opportunity for job skills training for the undereducated, the chronically unemployed and ex-offenders.

Hope Initiatives is a furniture manufacturing company that is contracted to build over 20,000 pieces of furniture a year, as well as a moving and storage company. The pieces of furniture are then distributed to those living in poverty who cannot afford simple household items such as a table, chairs, or a bed. Communicating the love of Christ, they share the love and truth of the Bible as they study the word of God each day before they begin their jobs.

Bill and his wife Beverly have lived on the shores of Lake Ontario for twenty-two years.
