About the Author

Let’s hitch a tide to Ipswich. Cool little town. I fell in love with it. Decided to move to it. Schemed to get into it. Then inflicted myself on it.
I write “The Outsidah,” a column for the local Ipswich Chronicle newspaper. Comments on life in my favorite town. From the perspective of a newcomer.
Of course, in Ipswich, b. 1634, to get past “newcomer” status, you have to be here longer than homo sapiens’ life expectancy. You have to be the human equivalent of a woolly mammoth. Even an actual woolly mammoth, if not born here, would be an outsidah.
But I am happy in Ipswich. Happy even to be an Outsidah among all the Insidahs. Because it’s a lovely little town. Quirky, perhaps — idiosyncratic maybe. Peculiar, one might say. Odd would be going too far, I think. But delightful, in its own way.
Here, then, is my little book about one year in the life of the quaint and charming town of Ipswich, Massachusetts. One year of high tides. One year of low tides. Or, to put it another way, 730 missed opportunities to float a boat outa here.
(Ah, let’s be honest — who could leave? I can’t. I’m Ipswich-addicted. I’m not even comfortable leaving overnight on business. What if something finally changes while I’m gone?)
If something in this book offends you, we have arranged a venting station for you at Outsidah.com. You also have the option of writing a letter to the editor. Or, as a last resort, you can move to amend the motion to amend the amendment to the amendment to Article 17 at the next Town Meeting.
Good people of Ipswich, I salute you. Er, us. Whatever.
