Overview

This collection of poetry - ONE ZERO EIGHT - is a commentary on the events, places and personalities that influenced and left a lasting impression on the poet.

This collection is an allegory - it uses the metaphysical and quantum physical aspects of the numbers 108. The interpretation is - One for Ego, and creation; Zero for the void of death, and regeneration, and Eight for Infinity.

This collection is a travelogue - it writes about the different places the poet has traveled through Africa, India, Europe and North America.

This collection ¡s autobiographical and intensely personal, albeit with heavy doses of poetic license and imagination.

This collection Is a series of paintings, where words of varied hues slide along the brush strokes of experience to create a vibrant and expansive mosaic.

Poetry, though, Is always a work In progress, as its interpretation Is like a shimmering mirage - enigmatic, mercurial, and ever-changing. The search for meaning is the adventure!

About the Author

Dr. Parvin D. Syal was born in Kenya of Indian immigrant parents, and spent his formative years there. After his schooling, he read medicine at the University of Nairobi and went to St. Helens, England for his post-graduate training. Fate, however, brought him to California, by way of Toronto, Canada, and he undertook further training before private practice in Family Medicine. Currently, he is an investigator of new pharmaceuticals with National Research Institute in Los Angeles. Dr. Syal has peppered his life with various activities outside medicine. As a community activist, he fostered the causes of the Indian-American community; as an actor he performed both on stage and in film; as a journalist he wrote literary and political commentaries for the ethnic press; as a writer he penned screen-plays, lyrics, and plays for the stage; and as a broadcaster he hosted a health program on radio. He is co-author, with Harshi Syal Gill, of an anthology of short stories, "African Quilt," and a play on the life of Buddha, "God Minus." He has also published an anthology of poetry, "Streams of Consciousness," in addition to contributing to several literary magazines. Dr. Syal lives in Chatsworth, California with his family.
