CHAPTER 1
Little Ensembles
Smocked Mittens and Hat
Designed by Terry Liann Morris, The Sailing Knitter
A touch of smocking worked over lace and a matching topknot flower give this hat and mitten set a feminine touch for that special little girl. One skein of yarn makes both the hat and the matching mittens to fit a toddler.
KNITTING THE HAT
* On circular needle, cast on 228 stitches. Place marker and join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
* Following the smocked lace chart or line-by-line instructions above right, work Rounds 1 through 8 of Smocked Lace pattern. You will have 190 stitches after Round 7 and 152 stitches after Round 8.
* Decrease Round: *P2tog, p7, p2tog, p8; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 136 stitches.
* Next Round: *K1, p1; repeat from * to end of round.
* Repeat this round until ribbing measures 1 1/4"/3 cm.
* Work in stockinette stitch (knit every round) until hat measures 5"/12.5 cm from cast-on edge.
Decreasing for the Crown
Note: Change to double-point needles when necessary as stitch count decreases.
* Round 1: *K15, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round. You now have 128 stitches.
* Round 2: Knit.
* Round 3: *K14, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round. You now have 120 stitches.
* Round 4: Knit.
* Continue in this manner, knitting one fewer stitch before the decreases each time and knitting one round even between the decrease rounds, until you have 56 stitches.
* Work decrease round every round until you have 16 stitches.
* Next Round: *K2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 8 stitches.
* Last Round: *K2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 4 stitches.
* Place 4 stitches on one double-point needle and work I-cord for 1 3/4"/4.5 cm. Cut yarn leaving an 8"/20.5 cm tail. Thread tail on yarn needle and draw through 4 stitches. Pull up snug and fasten off.
The Flower Topper
* Cast on 60 stitches. Divide evenly onto double-point needles and join into a round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Work Rounds 1–8 of Smocked Lace pattern. You now have 40 stitches.
* Round 1: *K2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 20 stitches.
* Round 2: Knit.
* Round 3: *K2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 10 stitches.
* Round 4: *K2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 5 stitches.
* Cut yarn leaving a 10"/25.5 cm tail. Thread tail onto yarn needle and draw through 5 stitches. Do not gather together snugly, do not fasten off.
Finishing
* Insert I-cord through the center hole of the flower. Pull yarn tail on flower tightly around base of I-cord. Using yarn tail, place several stitches to secure flower to tail, then take tail to inside of hat and tack the flower petals to hat 1/2"/13 mm from center. Tie an overhand knot in the I-cord. Weave in all ends. Block.
KNITTING THE MITTENS (MAKE 2)
* Loosely cast on 72 stitches. Divide evenly onto double-point needles and join into a round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Work Rounds 1 through 8 of Smocked Lace pattern. You will have 60 stitches at the end of Round 7 and 48 stitches at the end of Round 8.
* Decrease Round: *P2tog, p10; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 44 stitches.
* Next Round: *K1, p1; repeat from * to end of round.
* Repeat this round until ribbing measures 1 1/4"/3 cm.
The Thumb Gusset
* Round 1: M1R, knit to end of round. You now have 45 stitches.
* Round 2: K22, pm, k1, pm, knit to end of round.
* Round 3: Knit.
* Round 4: Knit to marker, sm, M1R, k1, M1L, sm, knit to end of round. You now have 47 stitches.
* Rounds 5 and 6: Knit.
* Repeat rounds 4 through 6 six more times. You now have 15 stitches between the markers and 59 stitches total.
* Next Round: Knit to marker, remove marker, place 15 thumb gusset stitches on scrap yarn to hold; remove marker, tug yarn tightly across the gap and knit to end of round. You now have 44 stitches on the needles.
* Next Round: K22, M1R in the gap, knit to end of round. You now have 45 stitches.
* Work in stockinette stitch (knit every round) until stockinette area measures 3"/7.5 cm.
Decreasing for Top
* Round 1: K2tog, knit to end of round. You now have 44 sts.
* Round 2: *K9, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 40 stitches.
* Round 3: Knit.
* Round 4: *K8, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 36 stitches.
* Round 5: Knit.
* Round 6: *K7, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 32 stitches.
* Round 7: Knit.
* Round 8: *K6, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 28 stitches.
* Round 9: *K5, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 24 stitches.
* Round 10: *K4, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 20 stitches.
* Round 11: *K3, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 16 stitches.
* Round 12: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 12 stitches.
* Round 13: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 8 stitches.
* Round 14: *K2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 4 stitches.
* Cut yarn leaving an 8"/20.5 cm tail. Thread tail onto yarn needle and draw through 4 stitches. Pull up snug and fasten off.
The Thumb
* Set-Up Round: Distribute 15 held stitches evenly onto 3 double-point needles. Join yarn at thumb/hand gap and k15, M1R in gap. You now have 16 stitches. Join to knit in the round.
* Rounds 1–8: Knit.
* Round 9: (K3, k2tog) twice, k4, k2tog. You now have 13 stitches.
* Round 10: Knit.
* Round 11: (K2, k2tog) twice, k3, k2tog. You now have 10 stitches.
* Round 12: (K1, k2tog) twice, k2, k2tog. You now have 7 stitches.
* Round 13: (K2tog) twice, k1, k2tog. You now have 4 stitches.
* Finish as for top. Weave in ends.
Spring Showers

Cool blue ruffles bedewed with beads flow from the cuff of these unabashedly girly little socks and matching hat. They'll be the perfect complement to a pretty spring frock. Both hat and socks are knit flat and seamed.
KNITTING THE LEFT SOCK
* Using a big eye beading needle, string 8 beads onto the yarn. Holding beads on yarn tail, use larger needle and the long-tail cast on method to cast on 7 stitches, *push a bead up snug to the needle, cast on 11 stitches; repeat from * 6 times, push up a bead, cast on 8. You now have 92 stitches.
The Ruffle
* Row 1 (RS): Slip 1, knit 5, ssk, k2tog, *k7, ssk, k2tog; repeat from * 6 times, k5. You now have 76 stitches.
* Row 2: Slip 1, knit to end of row.
* Work rows 1 through 4 of Beaded Fern Lace 4 times, then decrease as follows.
* Row 1: Slip 1, k1 (k2tog) 36 times, k2. You now have 40 stitches.
* Row 2: Slip 1, purl to end of row.
* Row 3: Change to smaller needles, slip 1, knit to end of row.
The Ribbed Cuff
* Begin ribbing on WS of ruffle. This is the new RS.
* Row 1 (RS): Slip 1, p2, *k2, p2; repeat from * 9 times, k1.
* Row 2: Slip 1, k2, *p2, k2; repeat from * 9 times, p1.
* Rows 3–18: Slipping the first stitch of every row, work even in established rib.
The Heel Flap
* Row 1 (RS): Slip 1, k2, place these 3 stitches on scrap yarn to hold; slip 1, k17, turn; place remaining 19 stitches on hold. You now have 18 flap stitches.
* Row 2: Slip 1, p17, turn.
* Working the flap stitches only, repeat Rows 1 and 2 eight more times.
Working the Dutch Heel Turn
* Row 1 (RS): Slip 1, k11, ssk, turn, leaving 4 stitches unworked.
* Row 2: Slip 1, p6, p2tog, turn, leaving 4 stitches unworked.
* Row 3: Slip 1, k6, ssk, turn.
* Row 4: Slip 1, p6, p2tog, turn.
* Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until all heel stitches have been worked, ending with a WS row. You now have 8 heel stitches.
The Gusset
* Row 1 (RS): Knit to the end of the heel; pick up and knit 9 stitches along the side of the flap, pm; k19 held stitches. You now have 36 stitches.
* Row 2: Slip 1, p35; pick up and purl (from the back of the stitch) 9 stitches along the side of the flap, pm; p3 held stitches. You now have 48 stitches.
* Row 3: Slip 1, knit to marker, sm k1, ssk, knit to 3 stitches before next marker, k2tog, k1, sm, knit to end of row. You now have 46 stitches.
* Row 4: Slip 1, purl to end of row.
* Repeat Rows 3 and 4 three more times. You now have 40 stitches. Remove markers.
The Foot
* Slipping the first stitch of every row, work even in stockinette stitch until foot measures about 3 1/2"/9 cm from the back of the heel, or about 1 1/4"/3 cm shorter than desired length.
The Round Toe
* Row 1 (RS): Slip 1, k2, k2tog, *k3, k2tog; repeat from * to end of row. You now have 32 stitches.
* Rows 2–4: Work even in stockinette stitch.
* Row 5: Slip 1, k1, k2tog, *k2, k2tog; repeat from * to end of row. You now have 24 stitches.
* Rows 6–8: Work even in stockinette stitch.
* Row 9: Slip 1, k2tog, *k1, k2tog; repeat from * to end of row. You now have 16 stitches.
* Row 10: Slip 1, purl to last 2 stitches, ssp. You now have 15 stitches.
* Row 11: Slip 1, *k2tog; repeat from * to end of row. You now have 8 stitches.
* Row 12: Slip 1, purl to end of row.
* Measure out yarn 5 or 6 times the length of sock and cut. Using a yarn needle, thread through last 8 stitches and pull up tight.
Sewing the Seam
* Fold the sock with wrong sides together. Match up the slipped edge stitches and pin in place. Using the larger crochet hook, with right sides facing, slip stitch each pair of slipped edge stitches together, working from the toe to the top of the cuff. Fasten off. Weave in ends. Block as desired.
KNITTING THE RIGHT SOCK
* Work as for Left Sock to Heel Flap.
The Heel Flap
* Row 1 (RS): Slip 1, k18, place these 19 stitches on hold; slip 1, k17, turn; place remaining 3 stitches on hold. You now have 18 flap stitches.
* Row 2: Slip 1, p17, turn.
* Complete Heel Flap and Heel Turn as for Left Sock.
The Gusset
* Row 1 (RS): Knit to the end of the heel; pick up and knit 9 stitches along the side of the flap, pm; k3 held stitches. You now have 20 stitches.
* Row 2: Slip 1, purl 19; pick up and purl (from the back of the stitch) 9 stitches along the side of the flap, pm; p19 held stitches. You now have 48 stitches.
* Continue as for Left Sock until Row 12 of Round Toe is complete.
Sewing the Seam
* Cut yarn leaving a 6"/15 cm tail. Using a yarn needle, thread through last 8 stitches and pull up tight. Weave in end to secure.
* Fold the sock with wrong sides together. Match up the slipped edge stitches and pin in place. Using the larger crochet hook, with right sides facing, slip stitch each pair of slipped edge stitches together, working from the top of the cuff to the toe. Weave in ends.
KNITTING THE HAT
* String 15 beads onto yarn tail. Holding beads on tail of yarn, begin long-tail cast on with larger needles. Cast on 7 stitches, *push a bead up snug to needle, cast on 11 stitches; repeat from * 13 times, push last bead up and cast on 8 stitches. You now have 169 stitches.
The Edging
* Row 1 (RS): Slip 1, k5, ssk, k2tog, *k7, ssk, k2tog; repeat from * 13 times, k5. You now have 139 stitches.
* Row 2: Slip 1, knit to end of row.
* Work Rows 1 through 4 of Beaded Fern Lace 3 times.
* Next Row: Slip 1, knit to end of row decreasing 3 stitches evenly spaced. You now have 136 stitches.
* Slipping the first stitch of every row, work even in stockinette stitch until piece measures 4"/10 cm from edge and ending on a WS row.
Decreasing for the Crown
* Row 1 (RS): Slip 1, k14, k2tog, *pm, k15, k2tog, repeat from * to end of row. You now have 128 stitches.
* Row 2: Slip 1, purl to end of row.
* Row 3: Slip 1, *knit to 2 stitches before marker, k2tog, sm, repeat from * to end of row. You now have 120 stitches.
* Row 4: Slip 1, purl to end of row.
* Repeat Rows 3 and 4 six more times, ending on RS row. You now have 72 stitches.
* Next Row (WS): Slip 1, ssp, purl to marker, *sm, p2tog, purl to next marker, repeat from * ending with purl to end of row. You now have 64 stitches.
* Continue decreasing each row as established on each RS and WS rows, working k2tog on RS rows and ssp and p2tog on WS rows, until 8 stitches remain, ending on a RS row.
* Last Row: Slip 1, purl to end of row.
Sewing the Seam
* Measure out yarn about 5 times the length of hat seam and cut. Thread through last 8 stitches and pull up tight. Turn hat so right sides are together and with crochet hook, slip stitch seam together as for sock seam. Fasten off and weave in ends. Block as desired.
Scalloped Ribbing Baby Socks and Cap
Designed by Terry Liann Morris, The Sailing Knitter
Tiny little scalloped edges and a circle of eyelet lace adorn this baby cap with matching socks. Dainty ribbing on the cuffs and foot of the socks help to keep them in place even when baby kicks. Hat and socks are worked in the round.
KNITTING THE CAP
* With circular needle, cast on 294 stitches. Place marker and join into a round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
* Work Rounds 1 and 2 of Scalloped Edging pattern. You now have 126 stitches.
The Ribbing
* Round 1: *K1, p1; repeat from * to end of round.
* Repeat ribbing as established until piece measures 1"/2.5 cm.
* Work Rounds 1 through 5 of Eyelet pattern.
The Body
* Work stockinette stitch (knit every round) until cap measures 3 3/4"/9.5 cm from cast-on edge.
Decreasing for the Crown
Note: Change to double-point needles when necessary as stitch count decreases.
* Round 1: *K16, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round. You now have 119 stitches.
* Round 2: Knit.
* Round 3: *K15, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round. You now have 112 stitches.
* Round 4: Knit.
* Continue in this manner, knitting one less stitch before the decreases each time and knitting one round even between decrease rounds until 49 stitches remain.
* Work decrease round only until 14 stitches remain.
* Last Round: *K2tog; repeat from * to end of round. You now have 7 stitches.
* Cut yarn leaving a 10"/25.5 cm tail. Thread tail onto yarn needle and draw through remaining stitches. Pull up snug and fasten off.
Finishing
* Weave in ends. Block. Weave ribbon through eyelets and tie a pretty bow. At back, tack ribbon to hat with a few stitches for safety.
KNITTING THE SOCKS (MAKE 2)
* With double-point needles, cast on 84 stitches. Divide evenly onto 3 needles and join into a round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
* Work Rounds 1 and 2 of Scalloped Edging. You now have 36 stitches.
