About the Author

Mark Gruber-Lebowitz discovered his passion for both writing and dogs at an early age. His as-yet unpublished novel, Ragnarok, was written between his freshman and sophomore college years. Every few years, he rereads it and cringes. Mark is a progressive Christian, devoted husband, educator of thirty-seven years, political activist, and co-parent of the amazing Pomeranian, Ronan. The publication of this book fulfills a lifelong dream. Sheldon Gruber-Lebowitz finds his greatest joy and fulfillment as a Christian, husband, and pet dad. He is an award-winning elementary art educator of nearly three decades. As a watercolorist, Sheldon’s art work reflects his love of God and the natural world. This book’s publication allows Sheldon to check “illustrator” from his vocational wish list.

CHAPTER 1

My name is Ronan, and I am one lucky Pom. That's short for Pomeranian, by the way. I am black, with some brown and white areas, and I am told that I'm a handsome fellow. I see life as a gift – as a blessing and an adventure – and I love it with a heart that's about as big as this whole world!

I was born in a little town in Delaware. But when I was just 10 weeks old, I moved (like the big brave boy I am) a whole state away to Maryland ... where I live with my 2 cool dads in this tall condo building ...

I remember the day I moved in with my dads, just like it happened yesterday ... even though it was 3 whole years ago! But on that first day, I knew that I was right smack-dab where I belonged.

My favorite memory of that day? That's easy! It's when my bigger dad, Mark (Sheldon is the smaller one) got right down on the floor and said:

"Welcome home, Ronan! We're your dads, and we're going to love you and care for you, for your whole lifetime through ... We promise!"

I didn't understand one single word he said. But what mattered was this: They were said in a voice that made me feel happy and safe inside. Ahhh ...

In no time, I began to explore my new home. There were SO many things to discover, behind each door and around every corner! My dads followed close behind, to keep me safe and out of mischief as I checked it all out.

You will never guess what my favorite discovery was: A pair of brown loafers, sitting by the family room love seat! I already recognized Dad Mark's scent on those well-worn shoes. In no time, I discovered that I fit perfectly between them ... and that the left one was just perfect as a resting place for my tiny chin. For as long as I still fit between them, I could be found napping there contentedly, day after day after day!

I learned really fast that 4 of my very, very favorite words are "ride in the car." As a matter of fact, just hearing "ride" or "car" was enough to know that I was heading off somewhere – and to feel all kinds of excited!

At first, those rides were pretty short – a few blocks to run an errand, or a few miles to meet a new friend or relative.

But then one day, about 3 weeks after I moved in, Dad Sheldon scooped me up into his loving arms and said, "Guess what, kiddo: You are going to the BEACH!" I figured that must be a pretty cool place to go, because my smaller dad danced me all around the room and sang the words "going to the beach" like a jazzy, silly song.

For me, going to the beach meant traveling back to my birth state of Delaware. It also meant staying at a really cool place called a bed-and-breakfast that was run by 2 wonderful guys who quickly became my Uncle Joe and Uncle David. To be honest, I never got the whole "bed and breakfast" idea, since I took my own bed and ate the same canned food I had been eating back at home my whole young life. My dads, however, slept cozily in a big comfy new bed, and started their mornings being served heirloom tomato breakfast salads and assorted quiches. All the same, I loved being a B & B guest!

On pretty days, my dads drove me a few miles from the bed-and-breakfast ... and I soon found out what "the beach" is really all about. I had never, ever seen anything like it: Nothing but sand and water, for as far as my little eyes could see! Sometimes, we would run along the water's edge or watch the world go by from beneath a huge, shady umbrella. On other days, I would just chill with one of my dads as foamy waves crashed against giant (well, to tiny me they were giants!) rocks. I instantly fell in love with everything about the beach, and I could have happily hung out there just about forever.
