Description: This is the third edition of a softbound pocket manual describing the approach to common problems encountered by the medical student or junior house officer on a surgical service.
Purpose: Evaluation of on-call problems is provided in a concise and organized fashion.
Audience: Students and junior residents are an appropriate audience for this work coming from two faculty members, one from the clinical faculty at Stanford and the other from the University of Southern California.
Features: After a discussion of common concerns in the on-call surgeon role, common problems including fever, chest pain, abdominal pain, hypertension, and mental status changes are presented. Concluding appendixes include cardiac care algorithms, tips for the reading of x-rays and electrocardiograms, and a formulary of common drugs used to address problems coming up on call. The 32 chapters are written in outline format with frequent lists, tables and line drawings. Presentations are terse and clear. Line drawings reproduce with good quality. The table of contents provides chapter titles while a subject index of 30 pages includes separate citation for illustrations and tables.
Assessment: This book has seen significant improvements in format since the second edition, published in 2001. A brief and effective guide is provided for the junior member of the surgery team. I was disappointed at the lack of at least some key references. For example, cardiac resuscitation algorithms predate publication by four years. Nonetheless, this is an effective and portable overview.
