Description: This book is one of several in the "On Call" series, designed to be used by resident physicians while on overnight call. This particular book deals with psychiatry call. It is the 3rd edition; the previous edition was published in 2001.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to serve as a practical guide for clinicians who deal with psychiatric emergencies while on call. These are certainly worthy objectives, and the authors meet them.
Audience: The book is written for any clinician who may have to face psychiatric emergencies while on call. I would not limit the book's target audience to only clinicians who may be on call; the book is thorough enough that any clinician, whether on call or not, would find it useful.
Features: The book is divided into two sections. Section I covers introductory material about the role and responsibilities of being a psychiatrist-on-call, and covers things such as telephone consults, use of restraints, capacity, and so on. Section II deals with patient-related problems, with each chapter covering a specific scenario, such as "The Anxious Patient" and "The Confused Patient". This section of the book is the most useful, and includes very helpful things like questions to ask over the telephone when first consulted, ideas for differential diagnosis, and so on. A terrific appendix is found in the back, and offers a review of the mental status and neurological exams, medical problems that may cause psychiatric symptoms, lab values, and other valuable things.
Assessment: This is a great little book, and too good to be used only by on-call physicians. It thoroughly covers almost any type of psychiatric emergency, and carefully walks the reader through how to approach and deal with them. Of course this book would be invaluable for on-call psychiatry residents, but all psychiatrists, and indeed all clinicians, should have a copy of this book to refer to. I will certainly recommend this book to the on call residents at my hospital.
