Chapter One

Ruben was like most boys and girls he looked forward to Christmas and the special feelings of joy and wonder you feel inside waiting for Santa's visit. This Christmas Ruben's wish was different to the past. This Christmas he wished for a new best friend, one he could share his special moments with.

Ruben's best friend Magdalena had moved away in the middle of the year. He missed his best friend so much, that tears fell knowing she could not share his special moments with him anymore. Ruben wished with all his heart that he would find a new best friend especially for him.

Ruben and his mum and dad were out looking for a Christmas tree to decorate and celebrate Christmas at home, when a bright red light flashed out in front of them. They braked suddenly to slow the ute, and then thump, crash, bang, wallop ...

'Oh Dear!' Mum shouted at the top of her lungs. Dad got out to see what they had hit. To their surprise it was a deer. Not just any deer it was Rudolph the lead reindeer in Santa's Christmas sleigh team. Ruben hugged his new friend asking Rudolph how they could help him.

Rudolph had broken his leg and needed some tender love and care to get him back on all fours again. 'Let's put you in the Moo-walker and call the vet', said dad. Ruben stayed close by his new friend's side to make sure he felt safe and at ease with his new surroundings.

When Rudolph had been fed and watered he told Ruben of his Australian holiday that he had been enjoying until his collision. He said that he was on his way home to the North Pole when he forgot to stop, look, listen and think, then found himself in the accident. Rudolph was sad because this would be the first Christmas that he would miss.

Ruben hugged his new friend and assured him that he would find a way for Rudolph to fulfill his important Christmas duty. Ruben listened to his heart and there it was, he envisaged Rudolph on the back of his 4WD motorbike with Ruben steering the way.

Rudolph liked his new friend's idea. Now to ask Santa! With a wiggle of Rudolph's nose and a blink of an eye Santa appeared all dressed in red and white with a cheeky grin. 'Ho, ho, ho, now, now, now what do we have here?' Santa said with a confused look on his face. 'Thank-you for looking after my family', said Santa. Ruben nodded his head and with a confident smile asked if he could help out this Christmas Eve.
