John D. Whidden (1832-1911) began life as a sailor the age of twelve. Proving himself early on, he quickly advanced, earning a mate's position by his early twenties. His twenty-five years at sea included saw, not just world travel, but major changes in the shipping industry and the Civil War. He retired from sailing in 1870.
