Description: This is a core textbook on the management of critically ill obstetrics patients. The previous edition was published in 2014.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a quick and easy reference for the treatment of critically ill obstetrics patients and their conditions. Although it is an easy reference, it remains remarkably thorough. It is also easy to use for those preparing for credentialing board certification. The book succeeds and surpasses its goals.
Audience: The book is written primarily for maternal-fetal medicine specialists and those training to care for critically ill obstetrics patients. Obstetrics/gynecology residents, maternal-fetal medicine fellows, and others in the ICU will benefit from this book. The authors are the authorities on the subject.
Features: The book is organized based on the complications that occur in obstetrics patients, such as postpartum hemorrhage, hypertensive emergencies, and amniotic fluid embolism. Any and all complications are covered. Chapters are easy to read, but remain remarkably thorough. In the cardiac chapter, the different scoring systems are introduced and discussed. Following an introduction, the book covers different cardiac lesions and how to counsel and care for these patients. The level of detail is remarkable considering the readability of the material. The chapter on hypertensive emergencies highlights new literature and ACOG recommendations. It is notable that there are no accompanying web-based resources, although this doesn't detract from this excellent textbook.
Assessment: This is an excellent reference on an important topic. The authors are the leaders in the field, the book is easy to use, and the images excellent. This will become a core textbook recommendation based on this edition.
