About the Author

Joyce J. Fitzpatrick, PhD, MBA, RN, FAAN, is Elizabeth Brooks Ford Professor of Nursing, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, where she was Dean from 1982 through 1997. She is also Professor, Department of Geriatrics, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY. In 1990, Dr. Fitzpatrick received an honorary doctorate, Doctor of Humane Letters, from her alma mater, Georgetown University. In 2011 she received an honorary doctorate, Doctor of Humane Letters, from the Frontier University of Nursing. She has received numerous honors and awards; she was elected a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 1981 and a Fellow in the National Academies of Practice in 1996. She received the American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award 18 times. Dr. Fitzpatrick is widely published in nursing and health care literature with over 300 publications. She served as co-editor of the Annual Review of Nursing Research series, vols. 1-26; she edits the journals Applied Nursing Research, Archives in Psychiatric Nursing, and Nursing Education Perspectives, the official journal of the National League for Nursing. She edited three editions of the classic Encyclopedia of Nursing Research (ENR), and a series of nursing research digests

Geraldine McCarthy, PhD, MSN, MEd, RNT, RGN, Fellow RCSI, is emeritus professor at the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing and Midwifery, University County Cork (UCC), Cork, Ireland, and chair of the South/South West Hospital Group, which comprises nine hospitals in the South of Ireland.

Description: This is a compilation of concept analyses with a focus on their application to research and practice.
Purpose: The purpose is to present concept analyses that depict perspectives within nursing, group them into content and process categories, and demonstrate application of Walker and Avant's content analysis process to the concepts. These objectives are worthy and give voice to concepts in nursing.
Audience: The intended audience is nurse scholars. The book is designed to guide them to advance nursing knowledge by examining the largest collection of concept analyses provided in a single book. Many others also can benefit from the book, including student nurses at all levels of education, nurse educators, and practicing nurses across specialties. The book can provide them with a succinct understanding of salient concepts in the discipline of nursing and the application of these concepts in practice. Both the editors and the contributors are credible authorities with diverse backgrounds, ranging from educators and researchers to advanced practice nurses and nurse administrators. Such an array of contributors provides a balanced presentation.
Features: The book groups the concept analyses into three categories: patient/client-focused, caregiver-focused, and organization-focused. Each category contains relevant concept analyses that are useful to nurses in today's healthcare systems. For example, transformational leadership, a concept analysis in the section on organization-focused concepts, discusses a highly regarded leadership style that nurse leaders seek to be successful in constantly changing and complex environments. Especially helpful is the consistent format of each chapter, which includes an overview of the concept and its defining attributes, definition, antecedents, consequences, empirical referents (measures), and concept diagrams. Most important is the application of the concepts to cases. These cases facilitate understanding about how to use the concept analyses in real-life situations, easing translation of concepts from theory into practice.
Assessment: Initially, the book appears too brief and simplistic. Yet, with further examination, it is clear that the editors and contributors provide a thoughtful and tangible way to convey concept analyses to nursing audiences. This approach to presenting concept analyses is engaging and motivates readers to learn more about concept analyses in research, practice, and education.
