Description: This is a handy, pocket-sized reference with basic prescribing and administration information for 1,400 common medications.
Purpose: The authors' intent is to condense the detailed and lengthy prescribing information contained in drugs' package inserts into a concise reference. They note that busy clinicians do not have the time to read and thoroughly examine package inserts, and this book meets the stated objectives.
Audience: The audience includes nursing students and adult or pediatric APNs. The authors are well qualified — one MD, two PhD-prepared APNs, and one masters-prepared nurse/dietitian.
Features: The book lists common medications grouped by classification and includes both generic and brand names. The main part of the book lists all medications alphabetically by generic name. The individual entries include information on dosage, dispensed form(s), indication(s) for use, common and serious side effects, contraindications, interactions, and monitoring. It also includes a list of commonly used abbreviations and is indexed by both generic and brand names. The major shortcoming is the extremely small type, which may present a difficulty for some readers.
Assessment: This is truly a "pocket" reference compared to other books of this description. It is quite comprehensive considering its compact size. As a drug guide, it will need regular revisions to add new medications or remove those that are no longer available.
