About the Author

Rebecca M. Patton, DNP, RN, CNOR, FAAN, is the past, two-term president of the American Nurses Association (ANA; 2006–2010) and holds the inaugural Endowed Perioperative Nursing Chair, Lucy Jo Atkinson Scholar in Perioperative Nursing at Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University.

Margarete L. Zalon, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, FAAN, is a professor in the Department of Nursing and director of the online master of science in Health Informatics program at the University of Scranton, Scranton, Pennsylvania, and an adult health clinical nurse specialist. She is the president of the Nursing Foundation of Pennsylvania.

Ruth Ludwick, PhD, RN-BC, APRN-CNS, FAAN, is professor emeritus, Kent State University College of Nursing, and adjunct graduate faculty at Northeast Ohio Medical University.

Purpose: The overarching goal of the editors is to raise funds from the proceeds of this book to support a Washington Fellows Program for Nurses. To make the case for this program, the book presents practical, real-life examples of how nurses shape policy and delineate why they should do so.
Audience: Graduate nursing students, RN to BSN students, RNs, and leaders of state and specialty nursing associations are the intended audience.
Features: This is truly a teaching text. The list of abbreviations used by many governmental agencies helps orient readers. Each chapter in the "Policy Challenge" section presents real-life scenarios to illustrate a step in the policy process. The book walks readers through each step of the policy process, and the final chapter outlines the need for nurses to be involved in policy. The book uses a student and faculty friendly format, starting with learning objectives, summarizing with key concepts, learning activities, and e-resources. PowerPoint slides are available on request, making this a comprehensive teaching tool.
Assessment: There is a plethora of policy books on the market, but none illustrate the steps in the policy process better than this one. The high caliber editors and contributors, all of whom have been involved in policy work, bring years of experience to illustrate the key points. This approach brings to life otherwise dull, dry content. This publication is timely as the shift in healthcare requires input from all health professionals, but especially nurses who are at the frontline of healthcare change and delivery. This outstanding resource will help motivate many more nurses to get involved in the policy process.
