About the Author

Richard Hatchett trained as a Registered General Nurse specialising in cardiac and intensive care nursing before taking up his current post as Principal Lecturer in the Faculty of Health and Social Care at London South Bank University. His interest in nurse-led clinics stems from Masters level work at City University, London. He has published widely and is co-editor of Cardiac Nursing: A Comprehensive Guide.

Description: This U.K.-based book covers the important topic of the nurse-led clinic. It contains useful examples on establishing such clinics in several clinical practice areas.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is largely self-evident in the title — to introduce the reader to the emerging practice model of the nurse-led clinic and to provide a how-to resource for nurses who wish to establish such a clinic. This is an interesting and important topic for a book, and the editor largely succeeds.
Audience: In my judgment, the target audience is primarily the advanced practice nurse in the United Kingdom. While much of the material has relevance and practice implications for nurses in the United States, the history, regulatory information, and some practice issues do not apply. The editor does not specify for whom the book is intended, but it appears to be a blueprint for those who wish to establish such a clinic. Case studies are presented on nurse-led clinics in contraception, cardiac care, and diabetic care.
Features: The strength and best parts of the book are the case studies. These are written by nurses who manage clinics in the specialty practice areas that are highlighted and supply sound practical advice. The editor provides a historical context for the emergence of these clinics and instructive chapters written by himself and others on important practice issues. Line drawings, charts, and graphs are scant but not very necessary to illustrate the main points of this book. Boxes containing checklists and bulleted points are helpful in some instances but more distracting and less illustrative in others. The writing style is somewhat dry and at times lacks clarity. I also think the book would have benefited from more space between the lines and a greater number of pages. The print size is quite small.
Assessment: This book will be most useful to nurses already running clinics or interested in doing so. The nurse-led clinic is an exciting emerging practice model, and this book is a significant contribution to the literature on the subject.
