L'affaire est écoutée par un auditeur sourd, et Quasimodo est sourd lui-même: le procès est une farce, et Quasimodo, sans avoir été écouté et sans avoir rien compris, est condamné à deux heures de pilori en place de Grève et à une amende. Sur la place de Grève, dans un entresol, se trouve le Trou aux rats, qui sert de cellule à une recluse volontaire, la soeur Gudule.
