The true logical foundation of the Fine Arts is inextricably connected with their concrete function, materials and processes; and abstract philosophizing, which has neglected the essential factors, produces nothing but fine words, conflicting judgments and bad painting. It is upon the practical sciences of picture-making, of sculpture-making and the like, and not upon any group of abstract ideas, that the aesthetic philosopher of the future will have to erect the complete all-embracing theory which will enable artists to be peaceable and confident in their work.
