Stephen Platten was educated at Stationers’ Company’s School, the University of London and Trinity College, Oxford. Formerly Dean of Norwich and Bishop of Wakefield, he remains a lifelong enthusiast for the classic Shell County Guides, in which tradition this volume stands. He is an “adopted son” of the County of Northumberland, having explored most corners of it in a series of ancient Land Rovers, and is magnetized still by its landscape, history and architecture. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.
Stephen Platten is an Assistant Bishop in the Dioceses of London, Southwark, and Newcastle. He has written extensively on theology, cathedrals and associated topics.
He was formerly the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Secretary for Ecumenical Affairs, Dean of Norwich, Bishop of Wakefield, and Chairman of Hymns Ancient and Modern. He was a member of the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England from 2006 to 2016 and Chair of the Church of England Liturgical Commission from 2004 to 2014.
His most recent book with Sacristy Press is Animating Liturgy.
