Overview

Packed with over 2000 color photos, this Field Guide identifies 426 trees (30 native trees and 396 introduced trees), and has captions with additional identification information. The book is in four parts: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Written by Rod "The Tree Hunter" Haulenbeek, this book represents two decades of observation and research on Northern Nevada trees.
There are two guiding principles of this book: First, most of the trees growing here have some feature that stands out, and that feature will help identify the tree. For each season, the trees may be different, and the book is arranged from the most obvious to least. Second, once the tree enthusiast has found the tree, they are done.
It's all inside.

About the Author

When he's outside, his name is "Rod the Tree Hunter." He is constantly scouring the landscape for woody plants (trees, shrubs, and vines). When he recognizes them, he checks for subtle changes (and they are changing all the time). He observes and takes pictures of things he finds interesting. When he doesn't recognize the tree, shrub or vine, he swoops in and observes all facets of the plant, recording, photographing and remembering for later.
The "Rod the Tree Hunter" moniker partly comes from the fact that Rod spotted 95 of the 304 Nevada Big Trees.
When he's inside, his name is "Rod Haulenbeek." He spends a fair amount of time researching, compiling and writing to make sense of his observations.
Where did Rod get his passion for woody plants? It started as a spark in his teenage years, smoldered during his education and 22-year career as a geologist in the oil business, then roared into the blazing inferno it is today.
His official education was via an M.A. in Geological Sciences. His unofficial education did not include much schooling in plants except for courses as a Master Gardener, Certified Tree Worker and Certified Arborist; but there is so much written and visual information inside, and there are the five senses outside.
Rod spends a lot of time volunteering for organizations which provide educational outreach about plants. He is a current member of the UNR Arboretum Board, and was a member of the Reno Urban Forestry Commission. He is also a University of Nevada Cooperative Master Gardener, and volunteers with the City of Reno Greenhouse.
Rod has lived in Northern Nevada for 21 years. He currently lives in Reno with his wife Jeanne, who he lovingly refers to as "The Little Spitfire."
