Description: This is both a stand-alone casebook and a companion text that can be used effectively in combination with NMS Surgery, 7th Edition, Jarrell et al. (Wolters Kluwer, 2021) (reviewed separately). The previous edition was published in 2015 so a new edition is amply justified. Purchase of the book allows access to an electronic version of the casebook, enhanced by videos and other features.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to "represent how surgeons think and make decisions about clinical problems." The editors state that they have attempted to write "in a way that allows us to 'talk to you' so that the book will be the next best thing to teaching in person." They have adequately fulfilled these worthy goals. The entire book has been reorganized so that a student or resident who wishes to use it in conjunction with the companion text can easily do so, as the organization is similar and cross-references to the main text abound. Many additional illustrations have been added, and the quality of the artwork is uniformly excellent.
Audience: This is a book for students and residents, written by established authorities. It sufficiently meets the needs of its intended audience.
Features: The organization of the book is parallel with its companion text and follows the logical sequence from general considerations to more specific topics. The format consists of a case presentation, followed by a series of questions and clear but concise answers. The book includes many innovative features such as a table of "Critical Surgical Associations" ("If you see...Think"),"Digging Deep," "Cut to Textbook." Chapters contain multiple cases and cases frequently include variations.
Assessment: This is an extremely high-quality surgery casebook. The ability to pair it with a companion text including multiple choice questions, the consistently excellent text, and the addition of boxes with crucial information render it exceptionally valuable.
