Description: This is a summary of current research on the impact of nitric oxide released from neuronal and non-neuronal sources on peripheral neurotransmission.
Purpose: The purpose is to comprehensively review current literature in which the role of nitric oxide in modulating peripheral autonomic neurotransmission is investigated. These are worthy objectives considering the explosive impact that nitric oxide has on mammalian biology. The editor's objectives are adequately met.
Audience: The book is intended as an authoritative reference for graduate level students and scientists currently doing research in this important area. The editor and I agree on the target audience. The book is credible and represents a cadre of some of the best researchers in this area.
Features: The origins of nitric oxide signaling are covered and the current state of knowledge on how nitric oxide modulates autonomic nerve function is detailed. The best part of the book is the succinctness in which this complex subject is summarized. It is rich in pictorial illustrations of complex mechanisms. The section on regulation of neuronal NOS activity is a bit weak. Then again, this could be due to the undeveloped state of this subject area.
Assessment: Personally I find this book to be an excellent resource for anyone interested in the area of NO modulation of the peripheral autonomic system. In particular it will be a valuable text for teaching professionals attempting to introduce this topic to students.
