Description: This is an excellent resource for the neurology and/or neurosurgical nurse. This edition contains updated and new information since publicaiton of the 1994 first edition.
Purpose: This book is designed as a reference for up-to-date information and assessment tools for the novice as well as the expert neuroscience nurse. The book reflects scientific and technologic advances in the management of neuroscience patients. The author's objective of expanding the focus of this edition to include the entire spectrum of care versus the acute hospital episode of care is well met.
Audience: This book provides a foundation for the student or novice neuroscience nurse, while also providing updated information and scientific breakthroughs for the advanced practice nurse. The author and her contributors are recognized experts in their areas of practice.
Features: This comprehensive resource provides a foundation for practice as well as information for the critical care and advanced practice nurse. The complete spectrum of care is explored with detail given to non-acute/home care. Each disease process highlights high-risk nursing diagnoses to alert the clinician. There is a logical sequence of presenting medical diagnoses with attention to specialized laboratory/neurodiagnostic studies as well as potential complications and/or surgical intervention. The many examples of history and assessment tools provide the reader with choices to adapt for their clinical practice. Although most subjects are thoroughly explored, the explanation of normal pressure hydrocephalus is limited to its relationship to TBI patients.
Assessment: This book is a useful companion to Joanne Hickey's The Clinical Practice of Neurological and Neurosurgical Nursing, 4th edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1997). The subtitle, "A Spectum of Care," speaks to the comphrehensive exploration of the neuroscience patient — from diagnosis through hospitalization and home care. This is a must for every nurse clinician who is learning about or delivering care to neuroscience patients.
