Description: Part of a series of seven books entitled Neonatology Questions and Controversies, this book reviews current selected topics in neonatal neurology. The topics represent a wide range of issues including meningitis, seizures, and hypoglycemia. In this rapidly changing field, this edition is a welcome update to the second edition published in 2012.
Purpose: According to the authors, the book is intended to provide readers with "a clearer management strategy of common and rare neurologic disorders." This is a worthy objective and the authors focus in on difficult management problems.
Audience: The book is intended for practicing neonatologists or pediatric neurologists. Because of the focus on selected topics, this is a wonderful reference to inform discussions on rounds regarding such issues as whether hypothermia should be applied to Sarnat 1 stage encephalopathic infants or prematures, etc. The authors and most of the contributors are well known authorities in this field.
Features: The book covers a wide range of neonatal neurology topics. Each chapter is a standalone review, with no particular organization or relationship to the other chapters. This third edition adds chapters on epilepsy and brain damage associated with congenital heart disease. All of the chapters have been updated from the second edition with the latest research in this rapidly changing field. The illustrations are appropriate and easy to view.
Assessment: This superb book addresses some of the most pressing controversies and issues in modern day neonatal neurology. Each chapter is well written and concise in addressing these issues, although often without clear guidance or resolution due to a lack of evidence. This is not a general book on neonatal neurology such as Volpe's Neurology of the Newborn, 6th edition, Volpe et al. (Elsevier, 2018), but because of its focus on difficult management problems, it will be a valuable asset to the various providers caring for neonates with neurological issues.
