Description: Genetic research has been explosive in recent decades and has had important implications for understanding normal and abnormal behavior. This second edition comes seven years after the publication of the first, which served as a textbook for the International Behavioral Neurogenetics Summer School.
Purpose: This is intended as a comprehensive overview of neurobehavioral genetics, especially as it relates to certain psychological disorders. The second edition highlights advances made in the last seven years, including brain-behavior relationships from systems genetics perspectives and single-gene techniques.
Audience: The target audience includes neuroscientists, biologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and neurologists. A moderate level of neuroscience knowledge is necessary to comprehend some chapters, such as those discussing neuroanatomical development. The editors are steeped in this field and have brought together an extensive international cast of contributing authors to provide indispensable information.
Features: The first chapter is a brief history of neurogenetics, but the book quickly launches into topics that range from Mendelian traits to gene interactions to pharmacogenetics. The novice reader will gain useful knowledge in the first few chapters before being immersed in more complex topics, such as gene identification. It is written at a level that allows novice readers to ease into the genetic literature and yet includes chapters that help to summarize the abundance of progress in particular areas that may be of interest to more advanced readers.
