Description: This is the third edition of a guide to the evaluation and treatment of the newborn with heart disease. It is advertised as the "go-to guide for pediatricians and neonatologists," but is really aimed at and written for cardiologists and cardiology trainees. The book is quite comprehensive with superb color illustrations of congenital heart disorders. The second edition was published in 2011.
Purpose: There is no preface by the authors, but the foreword written by Dr. Julien Hoffman indicates the value of this book is in combining the knowledge of pathologic anatomy and pathophysiology in the optimal care of neonates with heart disease. This objective is well met by this distinguished group of authors/editors.
Audience: Although advertised as a "go-to guide" for pediatricians, this book is fairly advanced and includes only one chapter on the basic evaluation of the baby with possible heart disease that a primary caretaker might encounter in the newborn nursery. The wonderful illustrations throughout the book certainly help noncardiologists understand the difficult concepts of congenital heart disease, but most of the book is written for cardiologists, trainees, or other hospitalists (intensivists and neonatologists) who might encounter these babies in intensive care units.
Features: The book is divided into the same 15 inter-related chapters as the second edition. The initial chapters deal with morphogenesis and physiology. This is followed by a very helpful chapter on the initial evaluation of the newborn with possible heart disease and then subsequent chapters divided by the predominant cardiac physiology. There are also chapters on drug therapy, postoperative care, and neurological outcomes of babies with heart disease. Probably the best aspects of the book are the clear color illustrations of various cardiac disorders as well as color diagrams of their cellular and anatomic aspects. The writing is clear and the appearance and readability of the book is excellent. A review of the suggested readings at the end of each chapter reveals few recent (last five years) references. The authors might consider a chapter on the ethics of intervention and the care of parents in future editions.
Assessment: This is a well-written and superbly illustrated book on neonatal heart disease. It is beautifully laid out and the writing is clear, but sometimes dense. There are no comparable books devoted solely to neonatal heart disease, but all of the pediatric cardiology books have abundant information on this population. Hospital-based intensivists and pediatric cardiology trainees will find this book invaluable.
