Nessuna delle due però riuscirà ad averlo. Tra le opere più amate dallo stesso Hardy, Nel bosco (1887) tratteggia con insuperata finezza la psicologia dei personaggi, soprattutto le due figure femminili, i cui sentimenti e inquietudini si rispecchiano nella natura viva e palpitante della foresta.
