Description: This monograph is a description of various types of injuries to the neck and their treatment.
Purpose: This is a monograph for the general surgeon, otolaryngologist, or a reconstructive surgeon called upon to treat injuries to the neck.
Audience: Medical students and junior house officers are an appropriate audience for this work. The author is a senior clinician with long-standing interest in trauma occurring at this site.
Features: Thirty-four brief chapters are included in this softbound work of less than 150 pages. The narrative is focused on immediate clinical treatment concerns without regard for epidemiology, diagnostic technology, and detailed outcome data. Illustrations come in the form of black-and-white line drawings, which reproduce well. Chapters contain no references, but a reference list with approximately 60 citations is included at the end of this work. References represent clinical studies dating to the 1970's and 1980's. Only occasional papers date from 1990 or later.
Assessment: This is an introductory monograph useful to the junior house officer or student on one of the services treating various forms of trauma in the cervical region. As many organ systems are contained in the limited area of the neck, it is valuable to have a single work providing some insight into the myriad of problems that can occur. Nonetheless, apart from the strength of clinical experience provided by the author, many components from textbooks of injury are excluded here.
