About the Author

Susan B. Katz is a National Board Certified Teacher and bilingual educator with over 30 years classroom expertise. She is the author of more than 50 children’s books, including over a dozen STEAM titles. Susan studied environmental science at the University of Michigan, School of Natural Resources and the Environment, and worked in a Costa Rican rainforest.

Featured in each title is the year and purpose of branch formation, weapons and techniques employed, and photographs of troops at work. Kids learn that the Army and Navy were created in 1775, the Coast Guard is responsible for sea rescues, the first female SEALS joined in 2021, and the Green Berets engage in guerilla warfare. Exciting scenarios are presented in the beginning to entice readers. The text is basic but refrains from being patronizing and the bright and engaging photographs serve to enhance it. Recent photos display the diversity of the modern US military. VERDICT Young readers seeking introductions to the military will find these volumes especially useful and purchasers should consider.
