Many readers are familiar with a more territorial and multistate discussion of Native American history, but this fresh and innovative set discusses that history on a state-by-state basis. While the group's past is difficult to conceptualize in that way at first, the introduction assures readers that Native Americans had quite an impact on state formation, as did each state's actions upon native peoples. This more locally based discussion is a key strength of the set. Each state's entry includes a chronology, a historical overview, a discussion of in-depth issues particular to that place, recent developments, a list of notable Native Americans from there, cultural contributions, and a selected bibliography. Simple black-and-white illustrations and photographs provide visual interest throughout. Each state's entry is about 20 to 30 pages long, providing a more than adequate snapshot of Native American life, culture, and key figures. The set is also comprehensively indexed, both by topic and by state. VERDICT This wonderful, thoughtfully compiled resource will be useful to those interested in exploring Native American culture as framed by a more localized and specialized context.
