Overview

This volume presents an overview of recent development, operation, and diverse applications of nano materials as chemical sensors, biosensors, and wireless sensing networks for myriads of legends driven by the ability to create significantly smaller, more sensitive, faster-responding, and less costly sensors which either negate or complement the use of cumbersome and less feasible conventional sensing system. Research and development in the nano sensor domain is driven by specific application requirements and social concerns. Nano sensors validates its eminence in varied field starting from electronics and security, aerospace and defense, healthcare, chemical materials and food technologies. This volume is a meticulous amalgamation of positive and negative aspects of nano materials to be used, electro and chemical nano biosensors, pollutant and environmental sensors. This volume discusses applications of semiconductor nano materials, a tamer nanostructures, signaling molecular switches, nano particle based optical determination of xenobiotics and pathogens as clinical diagnostic equipment, DNA sequencing and DNA based biocatalysts technology, Chemical and gas detection systems, nuclear radiation and humidity sensing system and biosynthesis of efficient, effective and low-cost nano materials. This volume will surely be a very helpful and effective guide for the upcoming researchers and students of biology, engineering and medicine to not only gain precise and prudent insight about nano sensing but also help to iron out several technological difficulties and issues regarding production and technology development of nano sensors.

About the Author

Dr. Naveen Kumar Navani, received his Masters degree (1993) in Animal Biotechnology from National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal in India. He received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Protein Engineering from Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), Chandigarh, India. He served as a scientist in DNA Fingerpriting unit of an institute of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in India. He then pursued his post-doctoral research with Professor Yingfu Li at McMaster University, Canada from 2003-2007, in the field of nucleic acid engineering and Nano Biotechnology. In 2007, he joined Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT) Roorkee, India where he is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biotechnology. He is actively associated with Centre for Nanotechnology of IIT also. His work has been published in reputed journals like Chembiochem, NucleicAcid Research, Current Opinion in Chemical Biology and Methods in Molecular Biology. He has also written book chapters on development of Aptamer based biosensors for detection of pathogens, proteins and small molecules. His current research interests include biosensor development using chemical biology and nanobiotechnology; especially developing antibacterial packaging for extending shelf life of perishable products, developing whole cell and nanosensors for pathogen detection and removal of toxins, xenobiotics and bacteria using nanotechnology. His research is funded by Department of Biotechnology; Government of India, Indian Council of Agricultural Research through National Agricultural Innovation Project, State Biotechnology Board and Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Govt of India.
