Overview

Its tobacco harvest time on the small farm in Trimble County, Kentucky, in the 1950s. In the distant tobacco patch, Daddy, along with uncles and cousins, is cutting stalks and loading wagons that will carry the tobacco to be housed in the tobacco barn that stands with the other farm buildings of the nineteenth-century homestead. Occasionally, despite the distance, laughter drifts across the fields to the ears of the young girls who are doing chores at the house and milk barn. Then, suddenly, there is a disturbance in the peace and quiet that spurs the sisters to seek safety with their family on the far end of the farm.

CHAPTER 1

Home alone from school on a fall afternoon, We had chores to do. Mom would be home soon. My sister put on work clothes and with bucket in hand, She was off to the barn, feeding chickens was the plan.

My sister wasn't lazy, as thus it may seem. She was just a normal teen with her head in a dream. Reclining on rough feed sacks, in procrastination, She crooned pop tunes loudly, without trepidation.

Suddenly, Ka-thump, and KA-thump she heard again. Were those footsteps she heard or just some old hen Hopping up and down on the stairs next door? Her heart was racing. She couldn't be sure!

Voice aquiver, she trilled another tune. Watchful ... Cautious ... Would the door open soon? KA thump! Her heart skipped a beat! Though afraid to investigate. She jumped to her feet!

Silently, slowly, she sneaked from the barn; Fearful that someone was there to do harm. She dashed to the house without delay. She must find me, whom she'd left at play.

With a finger to her lips, she grasped my hand, And wished for our legs, all the strength we could command.

"Will they think I am silly? Will they laugh at my fear?" She whispered, as we ran, to a field not so near.

Breathless, at the tobacco patch, we came to a halt, "Daddy, come quick! There's someone in the loft!"

Into the truck, we climbed in a hurry. Daddy wasn't laughing; His face? Lined with worry.
