About the Author

Annie Besant nee Wood was born on 1st October 1847 and was Died on 20th September 1933. In 1867 Annie at theage of 20 got married Frank Besant, aclergyman and they had two children.Annies increasingly anti religious viewsled to their legal septer just saw the sourcefrom which a universe proceeds is amanifested divine being to action in1873. She then became a prominentspeaker for the National Secular Societyas well as a wrtier and a close friend ofCharles Bradlaugh and in 1877 they wereprosecuted for publishing a book by birthcontroler Campaigner. The scandelmade them famous, and Bradlaugh wassubsequently elected M.P. ForNorthampton in 1880. Thereafter shebecame involved with union action,including the bloody Sundaydemonstration and the London matchgirls strike of 1898. She was a leadingspeaker for both the Fabian Society andthe Marxist Social DemocraticFederation. She was also elected to theLondon School Board for tower hamlets,topping the poll ,even though few women were qualified to vote at that time. She started the Central Hindu School in Benares as a chief means of achieving her objects.
